Is CapCut Safe? A CapCut Review for Parents

Overview
Recommended Age: 12 and up

By now, we all know that TikTok is dominating the social media scene. Over a billion videos are watched on the app every day (yes – a billion!) ), which means there are a lot of people recording, editing, and uploading all the time.

While many people post videos with little to no fancy editing, some want to take it up a notch. That’s exactly what CapCut is for.

CapCut is a video editing app created by Tik Tok’s parent company, ByteDance. These editing tools are specifically designed to recreate all the popular and trendy videos on the TikTok source.

If your child is an aspiring video editor, read on to find out if CapCut is safe for them to use!

Harmful Content😲
There’s not much to go wrong in terms of letting your kids create and edit their own videos; it all comes from their own photo library. The trouble comes with the templates, which CapCut’s creators publish and other users can “borrow” for their own videos. It’s essentially like a video frame that can be customized to your own ideas. Some creators will make templates with inappropriate audio or essentially mature images/videos, so parents need to be aware of this.

One of the benefits is that not just anyone can post a template. Aspiring creators must be approved by CapCut in order to have the right to release templates for others to use. This doesn’t mean that approved creators will post clean content, but it does mean that the content is more limited and not everyone is free to post whatever they want.

Another thing to keep in mind is that CapCut has the option to connect to a TikTok account if the user has one. After creating a video on CapCut, you can post it to TikTok directly from the app. These templates are designed to mimic what’s popular on TikTok. If your home has strict TikTok rules, CapCut may not be the best way for your child.

Predation🚨
CapCut has a high potential for predation, but it’s not entirely obvious. There’s no direct messaging feature on CapCut (unless you’re an approved creator), but predators can approach your child via indirect routes.

Remember the template we mentioned earlier? Well, there’s another problem. When creators post templates on CapCut, users can like and comment on their favorite templates. This makes it possible for strangers to contact your child through the comments section. If your child has a TikTok account associated with a CapCut profile, the risk of predation becomes extremely high.

The details are as follows: your child comments on someone’s template. A potential predator finds the comment and clicks on your child’s profile. They immediately click a button to access your child’s TikTok account. If the TikTok account doesn’t have privacy or parental controls, this stranger can now start a conversation with your child. So CapCut pretty much acts as a backdoor to TikTok.

Positively worth it 💙
One of the greatest things about the internet is the ability to create and share. If your child expresses an interest in making videos, CapCut can be a great creative outlet for them to try their hand at it! With tons of editing tools for beginners and plenty of online tutorials, the app will walk you through any editing technique possible on CapCut. But remember, it’s not the only video editing app out there. In fact, there are many more options. So if you have any concerns about CapCut, you don’t have to worry about running out of alternatives.

Privacy 🔒.
When you create a video on CapCut, your video is not posted anywhere for others to view. However, the commenting feature and the option to connect to TikTok are the most vulnerable areas for your child on this app.

Parental Control ✅
There are no parental controls on CapCut. The only security measure they have is the ability to block other users if needed. But other than that, there is no blocking/monitoring of the comments section and no restrictions on inappropriate content aimed at younger users.

The best thing to do is to not let them connect to their TikTok account. That way, no one can send messages directly to your kids, and the app is limited to its video editing capabilities. But even then, with no built-in parental controls, your kids can easily add their TikTok without your permission.

If you still have questions about the app, Bark is always here to help! With Bark, you can:

Block CapCut completely, if needed.
Manage when your child can use CapCut throughout the day.
So, should my child download it?
If CapCut is not connected to a TikTok account, we only recommend CapCut for older children (approximately 12 years of age and older.) However, we encourage parents to think about potential dangers beforehand and to talk to their children about how to post responsibly.
